Meet Dr. Ishaka Shitu Almustapha

Over the past 9 years, Dr. Shitu has demonstrated extensive passion and enthusiasm for research in Port Management, particularly in Operations, Finance, Economics, Supply Chain Management, Policy, Trade and Shipping. This has developed in the understanding of challenges and opportunities in port geography, operations and policy particularly on Nigeria and African continent. He has stint stay as Intern in IMO (International Maritime Organisations) in London, which is the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility of for the safety and security shipping and prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships.

Born and raised in Gombe, north-eastern Nigeria. He had both Primary and Secondary education in Gombe before proceeding to Prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to study Geology and graduated in April 2008.

In addition, proceeded Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in the Niger Delta for Compulsory national youth service corps (NYSC) from August 2008 – July 2009. Shortly, joined services of Joy Secondary School and taught Mathematics for Senior Secondary school students.  He had stint with Fortune Star Consultants, worked as head of operations for Monitoring and Evaluation of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) from Dec 2009 to January 2012 in Kaduna State.  He also worked as operation geologist for Sasco Exploration and Mining Limited in Kaduna from 2012-2016.

Dr. Shitu has broad experience in port performance in crude oil export logistics system distribution in Nigeria. In October 2021, he presented key findings for doctoral studies to the Management team of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), aimed to improve NNPC’s operational performance, business process and stimulate further innovation. In addition, presented at national and international conferences, seminars on ports, maritime and transport logistics performance in the last 6 years. He is a major contributor to Ditchley foundation 2023 Critical Minerals and the Green Transition that culminated into sustainable strategies. Ditchley foundation is British- American think thank focused on peace, freedom, and order around the globe.

He is currently a Business Management and Tourism Lecturer at Global Banking School, London and as well as associate with Ports and Logistics Consultants Limited, a company focused on Ports and Logistics and Global Dynamics. He likes travelling, reading and meeting new people.

Dr. Shitu  supervised over 35 MSc students’ dissertations at Plymouth University in 2022 for various courses such as MSc in Business Management, Finance, International Business, Operations and Supply Chain Management, International Logistics and Supply Chain and International Shipping to name a few. In addition, Reviewer: The 1st Business and Entrepreneurship International Conference, Modern College of Business and Science, Muscat, Oman (31 March – 1ST April 2021). Member of advisory board-Cases on International Business Logistics in the Middle East (October 16, 2021).

Dr Shitu holds a PhD from University of Plymouth in the UK, an MSc in Maritime Operations and Management from City University of London, and a Bachelor Honours degree in Geology from Prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Kaduna State, Nigeria.

He is an associate of Port and Logistics Consultant, a member of the   Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT, UK).  He is key member of Professional bodies such as Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientist (COMEG), USA Council of Supply Chain and Management Professionals (CSCMP) and Member Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House, London) and as well as member of Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).
